Egypt Make History by Defeating Australia to Reach World Cup Round of 16

New Delhi: Egypt created a historic milestone by defeating Australia 4-2 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in regulation and extra time, securing a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16. The dramatic victory in Dallas marked one of the most significant achievements in Egyptian football history as the Pharaohs advanced beyond their previous World Cup accomplishments.

Egypt took the lead in the 13th minute through Emam Ashour, who headed home from close range after a well-delivered cross by Mostafa Hafez. The early goal gave the North African side confidence as they looked to maintain control against a determined Australian team.

Australia had threatened earlier when Christian Volpato broke into the penalty area and struck a powerful effort that bounced off the goalpost and away to safety.

The Socceroos found their equalizer in the 55th minute through an unfortunate own goal by Egyptian defender Mohamed Hany. Attempting to deal with a dangerous Australian attack, Hany inadvertently diverted the ball into his own net, bringing Australia level at 1-1.

Both teams pushed for a winner during the remainder of regulation time and the subsequent 30 minutes of extra time, but neither side was able to find the decisive breakthrough. The contest was eventually settled in a penalty shootout.

Egypt held their nerve from the spot, with Mahmoud Saber, Ramy Rabia, Mohamed Salah, and Hossam Abdelmaguid all successfully converting their penalties. For Australia, only Jackson Irvine and Awer Mabil found the net, while Harry Souttar and Lucas Harrington failed to convert, allowing Egypt to secure a memorable 4-2 shootout victory.

Salah Delighted After Historic Achievement

Egypt captain Mohamed Salah described the victory as one of the proudest moments of his career.

“This is one of the greatest days of my life because we have made history for our country. I tried to give my best despite carrying an injury. That is what I always do for Egypt. We have qualified for the World Cup before, but we had never managed to progress beyond the group stage. This is a special and joyful moment for all of us,” Salah said.

Irvine Reflects on Heartbreaking Exit

Australian midfielder Jackson Irvine expressed disappointment at missing a chance to achieve a historic breakthrough for his country.

“Losing this match to Egypt is very difficult to accept. We had an opportunity to achieve something no Australian team had done before. Unfortunately, we were eliminated in a penalty shootout. Despite the result, I am proud of every one of my teammates and the effort they put into this tournament,” Irvine said.

Egypt’s historic triumph keeps their World Cup dream alive and signals a landmark moment for African football, as the Pharaohs prepare for their first-ever appearance in the tournament’s Round of 16.
